D.H. Griffin Wrecking’s Asheville team recently completed an urban infill project in Asheville, NC by demolishing a former Fudrucker’s. The site had been the topic of fierce debate for over 4 years, but eventually was slated for demolition to ready the site for new development. The project, along Charlotte and Chestnut streets in north Asheville, utilized D.H. Griffin’s extensive fleet of equipment that was right-sized for the application.

Duke Energy’s "Asheville Steam Station" Demolition and Decommissioning Project
The Duke Energy “Asheville Steam Station” project included decommissioning the coal yard items, limestone/ gypsum area, and the FGD facility. The second phase was the demolition of 2 boilers, precipitators, SCR units, turbines, and coal bunkers. DHG Environmental was contracted with Duke prior to demolition to aid in pre-cleaning the structures along with teaming with DHG Wrecking on multiple items. This project was completed at the end of 2022.

Tutwiler Hall Implosion: D.H. GRIFFIN's Abatement and Demolition at University of Alabama
D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company began discussions with the University of Alabama for the demolition of the Tutwiler Hall dormitory after successfully imploding its sister dorm, Rose Towers, on July 4, 2012. The Tutwiler was a 13-story, 270,000-square-foot concrete women’s residence hall on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was built in 1966 to house freshmen female students, as it did until 2022. Over the years, it also housed many different summer camp students, not leaving much unoccupied time for the university to make upgrades. Being the successful low bidder on the Tutwiler project, DHG immediately began discussions with the University of Alabama on planning for the set implosion date of July 4, 2022. Due to classes beginning in early August, the debris from this implosion would have to be removed by July 30.

D.H . Griffin Wrecking was selected as the lead contractor for the dismantlement of a coal plant in Paradise, Kentucky. Awarded for phase 1, 2, and 3 of the project, D.H. Griffin has successfully demolished the first two phases and, with help of their partners Dkyon Explosive Demolition, imploded the three massive hyperbolic cooling towers on site, the first of it’s kind in DHG history.

Restoring Science: Arecibo Observatory Emergency Demolition by D.H. Griffin
D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company was the selected contractor for emergency demolition work on the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico for the National Science Foundation. In December of 2020, the 900 ton platform fell over 450 feet causing significant damage to both the 1,000 foot wide dish and the supporting towers. DHG was tasked with removing all damaged portions and cleaning up the debris from this iconic facility so that scientific research can resume as soon as possible. The project area was so large, the clean-up progress could be seen from space!

Griffin was selected because of our ability to complete the complex explosive demolition project on an accelerated schedule all while safely mitigating risk to the surrounding structures. Nestled among several other office towers, including Dominion’s new all glass tower only 70 feet away, the D.H. Griffin team needed to employee a great deal of pre-planning and careful execution to limit any impact on nearby structures. D.H. From Brewery to Pet Food Haven: D.H. GRIFFIN Leads Turnkey Transformation for Nestle-Purina Facility in Eden, NC
D.H. Griffin along with private partners, purchased the former MillerCoors facility in 2018 after it had been shuttered for several years. During the real estate marketing activities, Nestle-Purina decided that the location in Eden, NC would be the perfect location for its new world-class pet food facility. The company will invest $300 million in the project and create up to 250 jobs over the next five years.

DHG contracted with LG&E and KU Companies for the abatement and demolition of the Cane Run Generating Station in Louisville, Kentucky The project’s scope included asbestos abatement, removal of regulated and special waste, and demolition of all structures which required mechanical, selective and specialized demolition. Contractors worked within stringent Air Force safety guidelines to take down two launch towers with explosives on a military base in Cape Canaveral, Florida. “As we started exposing columns and preparing for the precuts, we discovered that the degree of corrosion on and within structural members was too great to guarantee the necessary structural integrity required to safely proceed with this method,” says Karen Soricelli, a division manager at DHGW who helped oversee the project. “We made the decision to consult with Dykon Explosive Demolition Corp. (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and asked our client to appeal to the Air Force to allow for the utilization of explosive means in felling the towers.”

The project involved months of preparation and included both mechanical demolition with our large, specialized fleet of advanced demolition machinery as well as explosive demolition. The implosion of the 12-story Draper Tower on the former lifeway campus was the largest implosion in downtown Nashville in recent history. The campus on 10th and Broadway will be replaced with new residential, office, and retail.

DHG utilized both conventional and implosive demo onsite. Work included bringing down an elevated water tower and large boiler house. The elevated water tank was 180' tall supported on 6 legs and had a 200,000 gallon capacity. Universal Waste removal, industrial cleaning, hazardous materials and hazardous waste removal also included in Scope of Work.

DHG performed the demolition of this 93-year old brick structure using hand work and long arm attachment on excavator. Much of the 7-story was in close proximity to remaining structures, necessitating much of the work to be done by hand.

On December 29, 2002, D. H. Griffin Wrecking Co., Inc. (DHG) imploded the Cinergy Field baseball stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Formerly known as Riverfront Stadium, the 32–year old structure was brought down in 37 seconds utilizing 1,287 lbs of explosives. O'Rourke Wrecking Co., the demolition contractor on the project, hired DHG as the implosion contractor. The implosion of Cinergy Field brought down more than 150,000 tons of concrete, steel beams, iron pipes and reinforcing bars much of which will be recycled.

D.H. Griffin’s president, David H. Griffin, Jr. traveled to New York City following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 to volunteer his time and efforts towards the clean up. Griffin started as a consultant for Bovis on their quadrant of the site for demolition activities. After a few days David Griffin, Jr.’s cousin, Rusty Griffin, joined him in New York to put together a plan for how to safely demolish the remnants of WTC Tower 2’s curtain wall without negatively impacting the ongoing recovery efforts or causing further life safety concerns. After meeting to review the plan, the City of New York selected D.H. Griffin as the contractor for the felling of tower 2’s curtain wall. After the successful felling of the curtain wall, The City of New York approached Griffin with the opportunity to oversee all site activities moving forward. In all, the D.H. Griffin team was on site for 9 months completing phase 1 of the clean up. In the end, the cost and time savings for the project due to the team’s creative problem solving is immeasurable. D.H. Griffin was honored to be part of the recovery team and serve this patriotic duty .

DARI Richmond was selected as the selective demolition subcontractor for the Elevance Health (formerly Anthem) second and third floor restack project in Richmond, VA. The project was a relative breakthrough for DARI Richmond with a newer client in HITT Contracting. DARI was tasked with removing all interior finishes back to the structure while protecting the raised floor system that was to remain. The project had its challenges as the project schedule only allowed six weeks and the General Contractor was unable to get the material hoist erected for three weeks after our start date. Our team shined as they formulated a plan to start on time, work safely while staging demolished materials in an orderly fashion, and keep the necessary production rates to keep the job on schedule for the client. The DARI team successfully completed the 90,000 square foot project on time and under budget.

Restoring Heritage: DARI's Asbestos Abatement Project on Fifth Street, Winston-Salem
Subcontracted by DHGW, DARI completed asbestos abatement in a 6‐story building in downtown Winston‐ Salem, N.C. The project included asbestos floor tile and mastic, removed ACM pipe insulation from mechanical systems, and exterior transite skin from entire building. Once the skin was removed, remaining ACM fire‐proofing on the exterior structural steel was exposed which required scaffolding the entire building and building a negative pressure enclosure for abatement. DARI also provided the demolition and removal of two connectors to adjacent remaining buildings.

Revitalizing History: DARI's Integral Role in Camp North End's Adaptive Reuse
At this adaptive reuse project in Charlotte, DARI’s asbestos abatement scope of service contract included the removal, transport and disposal of over five (5) miles of friable thermal system insulation (TSI), over 200,000 SF of both asbestos containing and non-asbestos containing built up roofing materials, over 200 windows containing both glazing and caulking and over three (3) acres of floor tile and mastic adhesive. In addition, DARI was responsible for the removal and saving of various “artifacts” for ATCO, removal of all interior universal waste, lighting fixtures, and nearly 15,000 SF of concrete slab that will be used for a decorative garden/greenway in the future. DARI has been an integral part of remediation and renovation at the Camp North End site in various buildings since 2017.

D.H. Griffin Infrastructure Leads LNR Business Park Development with Rock Face Mitigation and Access Road Construction
D.H. Griffin Infrastructure has long been the contractor of choice at the Lenoir Business Park in Lenoir, North Carolina for new development. During a recent project, DHGI provided Design/Build services to install erosion control, clear rock face of all loose boulders and vegetation, clean up debris along base of rock face, and construct the new gravel access roads. For the rock face mitigation, we hired a third party to perform the rock scaling and install permanent wire mesh protective barrier. DHGI aided in hanging the wire mesh using two wheeled excavators to ensure the existing site fencing was protected. After the completion of hand scaling, DHGI removed all the debris, regraded the swale, and seeded. For the access roads we provided erosion control grading (both import and cut/fill), fabric and stone base, along with final seeding and matting of slopes for the walls.

Infrastructure recently completed Townsend Water Treatment Plant Lagoon 2 for the City of Greensboro. Work consisted of the construction of a new 5 million gallon HDPE lined residuals lagoon with cast in place inflow and outlet structures. Also included was all the associated yard piping, grading, erosion control, stormwater improvements, biofiltration structures, manholes, and electrical and SCADA work. Project was completed ahead of schedule. This project is just one example of D.H. Griffin Infrastructure in 2010 to complete the site work and infrastructure package for a nine tank, five acre terminal on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL. Included was the formation and construction of 110' diameter concrete ringwalls for nine tanks and construction of two 20,000 sf sediment holding basins. Infrastructure's work incorporated the construction of a truck terminal area including storm drainage, curbing, asphalt and concrete paving. The fire control system for the site comprised of source piping, fire hydrants and access roads.

Enhancing Transportation Infrastructure: DHGI's Contribution to NCDOT US-421 & NC-87 Sanford Bypass
In 2009 the NCDOT awarded this $27,600,000 project to DHGI through a competitive bid process. This three year project required multiple crews, subcontractors, and seasoned management to deliver the finished product. The 2.3 mile divided 4 lane highway required the excavation and placement of 1,500,000 cubic yards of onsite soils and 200,000 cubic yards of import. There was 29,700 linear feet of pipe installed on this project ranging in size from 4” to 72” in diameter. Forty-five thousand tons of asphalt was placed and 3 bridges were constructed containing over 500 cubic yards of concrete.
