The Growing Trend of Stadium Renovations in Professional and College Sports

In recent years, a significant trend has emerged across the United States, where cities and universities are investing heavily in the renovation and construction of athletic stadiums. This uptick is driven by the need to modernize aging infrastructure, enhance the fan experience, and meet the evolving demands of athletes and teams. As reported by News4Jax, cities like Jacksonville, Kansas City, Charlotte and others are grappling with decisions on whether to renovate existing venues or build new ones, balancing economic impact, community significance, and environmental concerns.

D.H. Griffin’s Role in Stadium Renovations

At D.H. Griffin, we understand the complexities involved in large-scale demolition and selective demolition projects. Our company’s expertise is evident through our decades of experience in the demolition of high-profile stadiums, both at the collegiate and professional levels.

For instance, D.H. Griffin was responsible for the demolition of the Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. This project was an American football stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. Originally built in 1927, all but a small portion was razed in 1994 in preparation for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars' inaugural season; the reconstructed stadium became Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, now EverBank Stadium.

Similarly, at the University of Tennessee, D.H. Griffin has executed the selective demolition of the Neyland Stadium press box, allowing for state-of-the-art upgrades without disrupting the overall structure. D.H. Griffin has also worked in multiple phases to demo various sections of the stadium for the University of Tennessee. In early 2022, efforts were focused on the North End Bleachers and West Lower Bowl, removing seating, catwalks, and structural steel. Later in 2023, Phase II targeted the South Stadium Dorms with extensive architectural demolition across several floors. This year, work included removing concessions and the façade on the west side concourse 2 along with demolition and abatement on Concourse 1.
