Contractors worked within stringent Air Force safety guidelines to take down two launch towers with explosives on a military base in Cape Canaveral, Florida. “As we started exposing columns and preparing for the precuts, we discovered that the degree of corrosion on and within structural members was too great to guarantee the necessary structural integrity required to safely proceed with this method,” says Karen Soricelli, a division manager at DHGW who helped oversee the project. “We made the decision to consult with Dykon Explosive Demolition Corp. (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and asked our client to appeal to the Air Force to allow for the utilization of explosive means in felling the towers.”

In 2009 the NCDOT awarded this $27,600,000 project to DHGI through a competitive bid process. This three year project required multiple crews, subcontractors, and seasoned management to deliver the finished product. The 2.3 mile divided 4 lane highway required the excavation and placement of 1,500,000 cubic yards of onsite soils and 200,000 cubic yards of import. There was 29,700 linear feet of pipe installed on this project ranging in size from 4” to 72” in diameter. Forty-five thousand tons of asphalt was placed and 3 bridges were constructed containing over 500 cubic yards of concrete.

DHG performed the demolition of this 93-year old brick structure using hand work and long arm attachment on excavator. Much of the 7-story was in close proximity to remaining structures, necessitating much of the work to be done by hand.
