A Legacy of Leadership in Demolition

With over six decades of experience, D.H. Griffin has built a national reputation for handling the most challenging demolition projects in dense, high-traffic environments. Our team is uniquely equipped to manage building removal in tight urban settings where safety, coordination, and precision are critical.

For projects involving close proximity to occupied structures, active roadways, and pedestrian zones, we implement detailed protection and control plans tailored to each site. This includes engineered traffic and pedestrian control systems, site-specific safety barriers, and phased demolition sequencing to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.

Our capabilities for urban demolition projects include:

  • Traffic and pedestrian protection & control
  • Dewatering and site water management
  • Limited structural shoring to maintain integrity during demolition
  • Selective abatement performed in compliance with regulatory standards
  • Precision mechanical demolition in tight quarters
  • Vibration and impact monitoring near adjacent structures

Every project begins with comprehensive planning and risk assessment, followed by strategic execution using our fleet of specialized equipment and highly trained personnel. Whether it's a single-story commercial structure or a multi-story facility within a confined downtown block, D.H. Griffin delivers safe, efficient, and compliant demolition solutions with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

Project Highlights

Walker and Scott Hall Demolition, Western Carolina University

Location: Cullowhee, NC

This project entailed the abatement and mechanical demolition of the 10-story, 142,500 sf Scott Hall and the 9-story, 45,000 sf Walker Hall dormitories on the campus of Western Carolina University. Our in-house abatement team, DARI, subcontracted to perform the asbestos abatement and removal of universal waste work.

All demolished block from Walker Hall was disposed of in a Title "D" landfill due to mercury contamination. Work included the removal and disposal of all subterrain building components. 85% of debris was crushed on-site and reused as beneficial fill.

Western Kentucky University Bemis Dorm

Location: Bowling Green, KY

This project involved the complete demolition and removal of Bemis Hall, a 9-story, 135,000 square-foot university dormitory with an underlying crawl space on the Western Kentucky University campus. D.H. Griffin employed specialized high reach equipment to safely dismantle the structure, ensuring precise control over debris fall in a confined campus environment.

The work began in August 2019 and was completed in November 2019, meeting a tight schedule that minimized disruption to student life and surrounding campus operations. The project highlighted D.H. Griffin’s capabilities in performing complex multi-story demolitions within active university settings, where careful coordination and adherence to rigorous safety protocols were paramount.
